Inspired by themes explored in Jean Genet’s The Maids
A New Play by Devanand Janki
DESCRIPTION
At Your Service grew out of ... my fascination with the peculiar intimacy of service. What happens when you know someone’s coffee order, passwords, medications, lies, childhood wounds, preferred lighting, and bowel habits? Is that employment? Intimacy? Love? Power? Probably yes. I also wanted to write a comedy. A dark one, obviously.
SYNOPSIS
Celeste Arden has built an empire teaching millions of people how to live with greater intention, abundance, and care. Fortunately, she has people for that. On the morning of Celeste’s biggest book launch yet, Ari and Reema arrive at her Central Park apartment to perform a small miracle: erase the wreckage of the night before and restore her life to effortless perfection before she gets home. Ari manages Celeste’s public world—her schedule, her image, and increasingly, her voice. Reema has managed the private one for sixteen years. They know what Celeste eats, what she forgets, what she means when she says thank you, and exactly how to make everything look as though no one worked very hard at all. Then they find the book. What begins as another morning of damage control becomes a wicked game of impersonation, investigation, and increasingly dangerous discovery. As Ari and Reema try on Celeste’s language, her rituals, and eventually Celeste herself, they begin to see how much of their labor, histories, ambitions—and lives—have been absorbed into the brand they helped create. By the time Celeste comes home, the apartment is perfect again. Ari and Reema are not. AT YOUR SERVICE is a dark comedy about race, class, ambition, intimacy, invisible labor, and the strange things that happen when the people who know everything about you are finally alone in your house.
