THE PINK MAFIA

A New Play by  Devanand Janki

DESCRIPTION
If I have lied, cheated, behaved selfishly, hurt people I love, been brave one day and a coward the next—what exactly does that prove about the thing you are accusing me of? Do you have to be good to deserve justice? I don’t think this play asks whether Rafael Mercado is a good man. I think it asks whether we can see the whole, messy human being—and still judge only what we actually know.

SYNOPSIS
New York City, 1992. Rafael “Rafe” Mercado, a gay Puerto Rican graphic designer and AIDS activist, is on trial after a secret former lover—a married Republican congressman—tests HIV-positive. What begins as a case about one disputed night soon expands into something much larger, as fragments of Rafe’s friendships, politics, sex life and activist community are arranged into the seductive mythology of a secret gay conspiracy: The Pink Mafia. Moving between courtroom thriller, love story and fractured memory play, The Pink Mafia asks what happens when true facts are arranged into the wrong story—and how much of a person’s life should ever be admitted as evidence.
